Back in the late 1980s computers were just machines used for businesses and other small jobs. Only the geeks, nerds, poindexters and propeller heads knew how to use them. All computers were using MSDOS or some text driven DOS type platform. In the early 1990s a revolution started to happen... A Graphical User Interface (GUI) and the electronic mouse was created by Xerox for their scanner machines, but the powers at Xerox saw this as a useless tool that's not needed for their machines. Steve Job's from Apple Macintosh was told about this GUI and went to see it. Apple asked if they could borrow it and study this technology, Xerox Said. "Sure do what you want with it, don't know why you want it but go for it". From that day you now have, Apple Mac OSX, Microsoft Windows and Linux the main computer Operating Systems of today. These technology pioneers created an industry so big and broard that today, There are so many new businesses built on this technology it's hard to image. You have, Computer sales stores, computer technicians, software development companies, a huge movie and music industry, successful multi millionairs just from creating ideas on the Internet. IT'S HUGE...
I love computers... My mother told me as a toddler I was always investigating things, taking things appart to find out how they worked. As I got older I was the fix it man around the house, if something stopped working, I would be the one to sort it out or I would be the one to figure out how to make a new toy or applience work, then teach my family how to use it. It was very obvious what I was going to be when I grew older, it would be something to do with the service industry. Because computers weren't so popular back then the natural choice for me was to be an Automotive Engineer. Because I moved from a small town called Barry Island in Wales, I had to work a lot harder to find jobs and build a career in the servicing industry.
In the early 1990s I got a job as a car groomer, this lead to an Automotive Engineers apprentiship. I became certified as an Automotive Engineer then I became certified as an Automotive Electrical Engineer. I was fasinated by computers in cars, how they manage everything and now they can even remember your driving habits then change the way the engine runs to make it more fuel efficient.
I got my first computer in 1998 when Windows 98 came out, my mum bought me a Hewlett Packard Pavilion desktop PC. I was hooked... The first thing I did to my computer was to take it apart to figure out how it worked, I must have broken that computer a hundred times, then I would fix it. Before I knew it I was fixing friends computers. A computer company it town offered me a job to be trained as a computer technician. I couldn't say no to that, a chance to become a computer technician. I went to Hewlett Packard for training and certification, and now I am training to become an Apple Mac certified specialist.
I love helping people with computer problems, I enjoy fixing all kinds of problems with computers. There is always a new challenge or a problem that I've not come across before, I will not rest until I've found the solution. I enjoy meeting new people, I enjoy the relationships I build with customers. One thing I do love, is when I go to a customer who has a problem they can't fix and they have a deadline to meet or they need to get an email sent or a job needs to be finished. NOW! The worried look on their face says it all. I love to come in and get them back on the road again and when I leave they have a look of relief and the smile is back on their face. To me it's not about the money, it's about what I can do to solve the problem you have with your computer so you are up a running as quickly as possible. That's what I love about my job. It's all about you...
